The world football governing boss revealed during a one-day working visit to Ghana that African representation at the World Cup would be improved.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino has wrapped up a one-day working visit to Ghana where he met with the country’s president and the football association chiefs, revealing that Africa would be given more than seven slots in future World Cup tournaments.
Following Fifa’s decision last month to expand participating teams to 48 up from 32, it was clear Africa would have a share in the increase but was only confirmed on Monday in Accra.
“African representation at the World Cup will definitely be more than seven in the future. Now on the precise number, we are still working it out,” Infantino said.
The 46-year-old expressed his joy on visiting “the country of the Black Stars”, who currently boast of three Fifa World Cup participations.
“I’m happy and honoured to be in the country of the Black Stars, who have written so many pages in the history of this sport and made legendary contributions to make the sport the number one sport worldwide," he said.
“I’m happy to have met His Excellency the president of this country (H.E Nana Addo Akufo-Addo), who is a great football fan. And this helps a lot because what we discussed go in conformity with my mission here which is to deliberate on the well-being of Ghana football.
“Ghana government must support the association to develop the game in the country. Ghana FA must be the leader in football development in the country," he added.
Goal understands that Infantino will return to South Africa to continue his continental mission.
