The former Tottenham Hotspur manager, Chris Hughton is expected to arrive in Ghana tonight to hold talks with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over the vacant Black Stars coaching job.
Chris Hughton is expected to be in Ghana from January 28 to February 6, 2022, by which time he hopes to be officially announced as the new Black Stars coach. Asaase Sports understands the Irish trainer will meet the executive council of the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry next week.
The 63-year-old who was born to Ghanaian postman Willie Hughton, speaks the Ga dialect fluently. He has previously coached Tottenham Hotspurs, Newcastle United, Norwich City, and Brighton and Hove Albion in England’s Premier League. He has also served as assistant coach of Northern Ireland, a position he held from 2003 to 2005. If hired, Hughton may be the key to luring Tariq Lamptey, Callu, Hudson-Odoi and other European based players of Ghanaian descent, who are yet to commit to the Black Stars.
He faces competition from Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo for the Black Stars job. Two others; Aston Villa youth coach George Boateng and former Cameroon assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko, are also in contention for the vacant job.
The Black Stars coaching job became vacant after the GFA sacked Milovan Rajevac on Wednesday, following Ghana’s abysmal showing at the Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana exited the tournament after finishing bottom of Group C with only a point from three matches played.

What is this? Foreign coach again? What do you sports journalists take us for? You are trying to justify it by bringing in his Ghanaian parentage and Ga dialect. Can't Ghana put together a two-man coaching team with a specific ToR of winning against Nigeria? Can't Ghana select the best in our local league for this short-term assignment? Hudson-Odo etc, what's wrong with us? If we use a foreign against Nigeria, we will lose for God is not mocked and for that matter we can't mock our own coaches!!
One of the nicest persons I have met will be making a huge mistake should he accept the Black Star Manager’s position if offered. Chris everything in Ghana is POLITICAL. Not only that one defeat and half of the population would demand your head and INSULT your mother. Football is fetish in Ghana please don’t touch the position even with a barge pole.
