Uruguay forward Luis Suarez says he will not apologise for the deliberate handball that knocked Ghana out of the 2010 World Cup - as the two countries prepare to reunite on Friday.
In what was one of the most controversial moments in World Cup history, Suarez denied Ghana a late winner in the World Cup quarter-final 12 years ago by deliberately handling Dominic Adiyah's shot on the goal line.
Suarez was shown a straight red card for conceding a penalty and then wildly celebrated off the pitch as Asamoah Gyan crashed his spot kick off the bar. Uruguay went on to beat Ghana on penalties to deny the Black Stars the chance of becoming the first African side to reach the last four of the World Cup.
Twelve years later, Uruguay and Ghana meet in the group stages on Friday and the winner will knock the other out of the tournament.
Suarez took part in a pre-match press conference on Thursday where one journalist told the striker that sections of the Ghanaian public describe him as "the devil himself" and they look forward to his retirement.
"I did the handball, but the Ghana player missed the penalty, not me," replied the striker.

I hate this man but truth be told. He has said the gospel truth. His role was to handle the ball with his hands to prevent Ghana from scoring just to defend his country. A penalty was given thus the turn of Gyan to also save his country by scoring unfortunately he sent Ghanaians to bed much earlier than usual. Fortunately for us we are meeting Uruguay tomorrow Friday 2/12/2022 with same Suarez still playing for his country, fortunately or unfortunately Gyan is not in the Ghana squad. As Ghanaians let's not pretend, we have declared 'WAR' on Uruguay. Just as former president Mahama said if Ghana won't go far in this tournament as for Uruguay we must beat them mercilessly, Partey, kudus, Inakki, Dede, Jordan, samed, semenyo, bukari, kamaldeen, afenya Gyan, fatawu, barnieh, please, please beat Uruguay for us. The president should start preparing to declare Monday 5/12/22 as ' Uruguay revenge day ' just as the Saudi King declared a holiday when they beat Messi's Argentina . Fortunately tomorrow is national farmers day, our boys should double the joy of Ghanaian farmers by beating Uruguay and dedicate the victory to Ghanaian farmers. Insha Allah it will happen.
