Very Reverend Philip Obeng-Adjei, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of Methodist Educational Unit, has reiterated the need for parents to discourage their school-going children from incessant use of the computer. He said this would prevent them from falling victim to the ill effects of the continuous and long-hours usage of computers. Very Rev. Obeng-Adjei said too much reliance on computer games by some school children at the expense of their studies had resulted in the inability of pupils to write and speak good English. He said this at the end of a spelling �B� competition among school children as part of the 2012 Methodist Educational Week celebration under the theme �Quality education, a tool for harnessing talents� held at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in Sunyani on Tuesday. Rev. Obeng-Adjei said recent poor performance of some students in speaking and writing English had necessitated the need to organise the �Spelling B� contest to resurrect the habit of reading among students. Fiapre Methodist Primary and Abesim Methodist Junior High Schools emerged champions in their respective categories with 37 and 50 points. Odumase Primary and Fiapre JHS took second positions in their respective categories. The other participating schools were Sunyani Methodist `A� and `B� Primary and JHS, as well as Odumase Primary and JHS. Later in an interview with Ghana News Agency, Mr. Maxwell Opoku, assistant headteacher of Abesim JHS congratulated the organizers for the fair organisation of this year�s keenly-contested competition. He commended teachers and students of the Abesim schools for winning the competition and urged the students to continue to learn hard to retain the title next year.
