Residents Sensitized On Rain Water Preservation

The District Chief Executive for the Lawra District Assembly, Abu Sampson has revealed that the Assembly has opted to further address water shortages in deprived communities by enlightening inhabitants on the need to preserve rain water for use. He said the implementation of this idea would go to boost the efforts by government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as they strive to improve potable water. He claims he had a special team from the Agric and Health Directorate who have collaborated with the Assembly to occasionally embark on an outreach programme to educate people in the local areas on the storage and treatment of rain water. He was optimistic that this initiative will largely be responsive to the myriads of challenges in the water sector, if promoted very well in the area. Mr. Abu Sampson was speaking to Ghanadistricts.com in an interview to mark the World Water Day Celebrations. The WWD celebration is earmarked annually by the United Nations on 22nd March. The Assembly is also pursuing plans to improve the water system district wide as it has joined forces with some NGOs to provide potable water across board in all communities. He indicated that a good number of boreholes have been drilled for various communities in the district, adding that the Assembly has also recently submitted 20 selected communities to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) to be supported with the drilling of boreholes. He was however quick to add that there were still more areas to be covered with potable water due to the enormous pressure on the available facilities which do not commensurate the growing population in the area.
