Two people were killed with six others hospitalized when a water tanker ran into a home at Mamobi near the polyclinic in the early hours of yesterday. The Benz Actros vehicle, with registration number GN 4961 Z, was alleged to be speeding at the T-Junction when the driver lost control of the steering wheel and smashed the wooden structure the victims were sleeping in around 2:30am. The dead have been identified as Gabriel Deha and Mama while Mercy Mensah, Faustiana Deha, Jennifer Tay, Fafali Have, Vinolia Deha and Sampson Deha were seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle however escaped after running into the people. An eyewitness account indicated that those killed and the injured people were all occupants of the wooden structure which used to be a drinking spot. The eyewitness described the incident as the sound of a �big crashing thump� when the truck hit the house, bringing down the wooden structure on the victims who were fast asleep. �Gabriel Deha was trapped under the vehicle with all his intestines gushing out while Mama�s head was smashed,� he added. When police personnel from the Kotobabi Motor Traffic and Transport Unit visited the scene around 3am, there was nothing that they could do than to call the Fire Service and NADMO to help save the injured victims trapped under the debris. The witness said Gabriel arrived from the Volta Region to visit his wife and was asleep when the accident happened. Mama also came from the Volta Region two weeks ago to help the aunt with her �chop bar� business. Police confirmed the two dead, adding that two of the injured persons had been discharged from the Mamobi Polyclinic while four others were still in a critical condition. The Nima Divisional Police Commander, Yoosa Bonga, visited the scene to obtain firsthand information. ACP Bonga, after the tour, described the scene as sad and sympathized with the family. He could however not state immediately if the accident was as a result of human error. Police have mounted a search for the runaway driver of the water tanker. The vehicle has since been towed to the Kotobabi District Police station.
