A police officer, Lance Corporal Iddi Braimah, 35, has been shot dead by a gang of armed robbers during an operation at Ashaiman. One of the robber, identified as Kweteku Prosper, 29, alias Kush, was also killed later in a clash with the police, but a second person, Godson Mantey, 25, was arrested and is helping the police with their investigations. The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Timbilla who briefed the media on the incident in Accra yesterday said, at about 1:30pm on April 10, the Police received information that some armed robbers at Ashaiman had snatched two saloon cars from their owners and were offering them for sale. He said the Command dispatched personnel to Ashaiman, and the suspects were spotted in a black Toyota Corolla car with registration number GE 4910-09. The commander said as the police approached, the robbers opened fire and Lance Corproal Braimah was hit by two bullets. The Police had to abandon the operation and take the wounded officer to the Police Hospital where he died while receiving treatment. He said two days later, the police, acting upon a tip-off, stormed the hideout of the robbers at Ashaiman and in the ensuing exchange of fire, Prosper was gunned down. Mantey fled but later surrendered to the police and was arrested to assist with investigation. The commander appealed to health facilities, including herbal centres, to call the police if anyone visited them to seek treatment for gun-shot wounds.
