EC Gets GH�17m From UK For Election 2012

Ghana will receive an amount of GhC17 million from the British government to support the upcoming elections. According to the UK�s Department for International Development, the money is to help ensure free, fair and a transparent election. Other agencies set to benefit from the support are the Centre for Democratic Development CDD, the Judiciary and Star Ghana among others. Peter Jones, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, indicated that �the continuing success and the continuing effect of the democratic process here in Ghana is something that still matters for the continent and I think recently that has shown us some strides forward for democracy in West Africa.� He added: �Obviously, some setbacks are worrying some countries but we in the United Kingdom would continue to remain extremely committed to Ghana�s democratic success.� In response, the chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan expressed the Commission�s appreciation saying that �all who have received the support must endeavour to work with it for the collective success of the entire country.�
