Driver Kills City Guard Over Cash

The Kumasi Police have mounted a search for the driver of the urvan bus with registration number AS 5826 Y who is alleged to have murdered a Kumasi city guard for allegedly attempting to extort some money from him (driver). The driver, who is yet to be identified, was said to have hit the deceased, George Moore, with an object during a misunderstanding that ensued between the driver and city guard over the money. He then hopped into his car and escaped, but George allegedly collapsed and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital only to die shortly after arrival, the Public Relations Officer for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Godwin Okumah Nyame, said while confirming the incident to The Finder in an interview yesterday. He said the only information the assembly had received concerning the matter was that the deceased was allegedly demanding some money from the driver and that led to a struggle in which the driver allegedly hit the guard with an object. I am not in a position to confirm how much money may have been involved and the exact offense for which our man came into contact with this runaway driver, but I can tell you that the body of George is at the KATH Morgue and an official report has been lodged with the Kumasi Central Police for them to track the driver, he said. According to Mr Okumah Nyame, the incident happened in the early morning of last Tuesday in front of Adehyeman Gardens in Kumasi. Checks with the police confirmed that such a report had been made and that investigations were already underway in the matter. They had however not made any arrests as at the time of filing this report in the afternoon of Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the KMA, Mr Samuel Sarpong, met all city guards in Kumasi yesterday and cautioned them against behaviours that could tarnish the image of the assembly. He threatened not to shield anyone should they go contrary to the rules of their engagement and cited several instances where some of their colleagues were dismissed for unprofessional conduct. He however appealed to the public to avoid attacking the city guards should the city guards even treat them unfairly. Rather than hurting city guards, the mayor appealed to members of the public to develop the habit of reporting the misconduct of the personnel so that due action could be taken against them.
