Prisoners Unlikely To Register In Biometric Exercise

It is unclear whether inmates at the countrys prisons can take part in the ongoing biometric registration exercise. The prisoners were expected to register in the fourth phase of the exercise which began today but authorities at the Prisons Service cant confirm when registration of the inmates will commence. The EC earlier postponed the registration of the prisoners to the last phase of the exercise to allow the inmates ample time to produce an authentic identification card but the prisoners have failed to meet this requirement while those who have brought their National Health Insurance Cards cant still register with that. The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, ASP Courage Atsem in an interview with XYZ News said the Service is still waiting for the inmates to provide IDS for the exercise. According to him, the whole idea of registering prisoners must be looked at again. The way things are now I think the Electoral Commission will have to consider the whole thing again and lower the bar in the case of the prisoners. I dont think if the EC will allow them [Prisoners] to use their commitment warrants which are the identity we have on them, in that case it will be easy for us.
