Western Fishermen Cry As 'Strange Weeds' Takeover Water Bodies

Some fishermen in the Western region say some strange weeds have taken over parts of the water bodies where they fish, a situation which has thrown many out of business. According to oceanographers, the algae bloom is dangerous and poisonous to fish. This type of weed, according to experts, is quite different from the kind referred to as green-green by local fishermen in Ghana. Fishermen in communities like Dixcove and Princess Town in the western region are the hardest hit. Chief fisherman for Sekondi, Nana Asakoma in an interview with XYZ News said his colleagues are now struggling to take care of their families since their only source of livelihood is being destroyed. Meanwhile, the Director of Agric in the Dangbe East District in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Alice Arthur is urging farmers in Bedeku and its environs to report any sign of the invasion of army worms in the area. Farmers in the community have expressed worry over the invasion of army worms on their farm lands. This according to Agric experts could cause severe havoc to farm produce. But Dr. Arthur said extension officers are doing their best to contain the situation and avoid its spread. President of the Best Farmer Award Winners Association, Philip Abayori tells XYZ News, if not tackled as soon as possible, the army worm infestation could severely affect crop production.
