Man Impregnates Own Sister...Wants To Marry Her

The insistence of 22 year old Kofi Mensah to marry his blood sister has landed him in police grip. Kofi Mensah is now in the custody of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service in Cape Coast. According to the Central Regional Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, George Appiah-Sakyi, Mensah a native of Abura Abekah in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District of the Central Region and his sister from the same parents, have been having an amorous relationship for some time now. He said their mother, Madam Francisca Hackman became aware of the relationship and warned the two several times to stop the affair but they persisted in their resolve. DSP Appiah-Sakyi said somewhere last year, Madam Hackman detected that Asumanba was pregnant and when she interrogated her about the pregnancy, it came to light that it was her brother/boyfriend, Mensah who had impregnated her. Mr Appiah-Sakyi said Mensah also accepted responsibility of the pregnancy after which Madam Hackman charged him 40 cedis as Ndomfar (money charged for impregnating a girl before marriage). He said Mensah paid the charge after which he continued with the relationship. Asumanba however continued to stay with the mother until she gave birth while Mensah left the house to hire a room. Asumanba gave birth about three months ago, after which Mensah began putting pressure on their mother to release Asumanba to join him as his wife, since he had paid the 'Ndomfar'. Madam Hackman was said to have consistently refused to allow him have his sister as a wife. This DSP Appiah-Sakyi said infuriated Mensah who then started issuing death threats to his mother. Fearing for her life, Madam Hackman reported the threats to the Abura Dunkwa police who in turn arrested Mensah. DSP Appiah-Sakyi said Mensah would be put before court Monday May 21, 2012 charged with incest. He said Asumanba would also be charged with the same offence since she consented to the affair and she is above 18 years. DSP Appiah-Sakyi indicated that Madam Hackman may also be charged with abettment of crime since the collection of the 'Ndomfar' implied to some extent that she was ready to accept the relationship. If found guilty by the court, Mensah and Asumanba could be sentenced to a term, not less than three years and not more that 25 years.
