NDC Logo Not Property Of Konadu Rawlings Cadres

Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Brong Ahafo Region have stated categorically that it was the late Alhaji Kwadwo Maama Adam, the former Regional Organising Assistant of the Committees for the Defence of the Revolution, who suggested the use of the umbrella as the logo of the NDC. They said, they were, therefore, surprised at attempts by the former First Lady, Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, to distort the facts about the origin of the logo and registering the said logo as her intellectual work on April 12, 2012. The group, calling itself Cadres of the 31st December Revolution, recalled that in April and May 1992, meetings were held with Alhaji Adam, during which His suggestion of using the umbrella as the logo was endorsed and same was taken to Accra. Addressing a press conference in Sunyani, the group insisted that former President J. J. Rawlings confirmed this at the funeral of the late Mr Adam on Tuesday, September 10, 1992 in his tribute when he said, When the NDC was formed in 1992, it was the late Alhaji Adam who designed the umbrella symbol for the party. Mr Kingsford J. Ohene-Gyaase, the Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary of the Cadre Movement who read the statement at the conference, supported that claim with a photocopy of the Friday, September 13, 1992 edition (Page 13), which captured the event, and added that this had also been corroborated by Prof. Kwame Addo, formerly of the School of Fine Arts, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. The NDC activists stressed, We Cadres of the 31st December Revolution, with a background knowledge of the origin of the National Democratic Congress logo are deeply surprised at attempts by Nana Konadu to distort the origin of the logo. We wish to use this forum to set the record straight by stating emphatically that, the umbrella or Akatamanso symbol was not created by the former First Lady as her Lawyer, Mr Stanley Ahorlu would want the good people of Ghana to believe, Mr Ohene-Gyaase stressed. The group pointed out that, It is important to note that, nobody can jump a stage in the development of history. It is, therefore, instructive to state that, it is rather the run of the time and the dynamics of history that created a leadership vacuum in which former President Rawlings aptly responded. Mr Ohene-Gyaase added that, The situation of the time found leadership in him and the monumental achievement of the Rawlings regime could be attributed to the contributory effort of his lieutenants and the progress-minded Cadres that sacrificed to assist. He added that it was, therefore, important to learn the lessons of history and We must not take refuge in history despite the success of the past. If we do, we will not be able to understand the present and going forward will be a difficult and disastrous venture. By this, the Regional Secretary of the Cadre Movement observed, We wish to indicate quite clearly and to remind all party faithful of the collective creation of the NDC by all of us to protect and strengthen the party to ensure its continuity in power after 2012. Mr Ohene-Gyaase stressed that posterity would judge the people very harshly if they allowed an individual to destroy the treasured legacy of the present generation and that of those yet unborn. Notable among the group at the press conference were the Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) for Sunyani and Asunafo North, Mr Kwasi Oppong Ababio and Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku respectively.
