Two Siblings Killed By Collapsing Wall

Two sibblings were killed when the wall of a building in which they were sleeping at Dompoase-Aprabo in Kumasi collapsed on them on Sunday after a heavy downpour. They have been identified as Akwasi Frimpong, four years, and Abena Achiaa, four months. Akosua Owusuaa, their mother, who was about to enter the room when the building crumbled, sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged at hospital. The Assembly Member for Aprabo, Mr Elliot Bannor, told graphic.com.gh that the rains started about 9 p.m. at a time the childrens father was not in the house. Around 11 p.m., Owusuaa, who was with the children, defied the heavy rains and went out to buy something, leaving the two children in the room. Moments before the mother re-entered her room, the building collapsed. Mr Bannor said the mother had been staying in the room with her husband who used to be the caretaker of the communitys toilet for over a year. During the later part of last year, the Unit Committee of Aprabo sacked the caretaker from his job as a result of alleged persistent threats to kill his wife. Since the room in which he lived was reserved for the caretaker of the community toilet, the man was supposed to vacate the room but he had since refused to move out. Mr Bannor said on hearing the news of the collapsed building, he rushed to the scene and later informed the Ghana National Fire Service who helped in retrieving the bodies.
