A 14-year-old form one student of the Dawhenya Methodist Junior High School (JHS) was killed last Monday after an Opel taxi she was travelling in ran into a stray cow on the Tema-Aflao Highway.
The deceased, Rebecca Tetteh Akuson, was being driven by a relative, Jacob Akuson, in the cab with registration number AS 8399 P.
The stray cow, with a rope fastened around its neck, was believed to have escaped tethering in a bush around Dawhenya in the Ningo-Prampram District, where it was believed to be grazing.
According to an eyewitness, at about 5am last Monday they spotted the Opel taxi cab travelling at top speed towards Dawhenya from Kpone.
Upon reaching Filling Station, a popular bus stop at Dawhenya, a trotting cow emerged abruptly and entered the lane of the speeding cab.
�The taxi ran straight into the side of the cow, killing it with the front passenger side of the vehicle where the girl was sitting,� the eyewitness said.
The two passengers sustained serious injuries and were bleeding profusely when they were rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Tema General Hospital (TGH), where Rebecca Tetteh Akuson was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to a police officer who was at the scene to tow the damaged vehicle to the area�s police station, had the deceased fastened on her seatbelt her life could have been saved.
He said he believed that the driver was over-speeding, considering the nature of the impact.
He cautioned motorists to reduce their speed when they were approaching towns, junctions and areas with �Cattle Crossing� inscriptions.
When contacted, a relative of the deceased told The Finder that Rebecca and Jacob were returning from Ashaiman on an errand.
