BUSAC Fund Disburses GH2.5m Up North

The Business Sector Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund, in its second phase, has disbursed GH2.5 million to 58 Private Sector Organisations (PSOs) in the three regions of the north to do business advocacy, B&FT has gathered. The disbursed funds will enable the PSOs in the north call attention to laws and regulations which impede efficient business practices. The grantees are also expected to advocate provision and access to infrastructure, enforcement of standards, and to campaign against unfair competition and constraining laws and policies such as burdensome tax laws and administrative bottlenecks. Owing to the success of the Call #2 under Phase II of the project, many PSOs in the north and the country in general are preparing proposals to be submitted to the BUSAC Fund for funding under Call #3 of the Phase II. Projects that are found to be relevant and feasible with the greatest potential to remove constraints in doing business and positively contribute to private-sector growth and development would be funded, Mr. Dennis Puorideme, Tamale Office Chief of BUSAC, told B&FT. The BUSAC Fund Phase II is supported by DANIDA, USAID and the European Commission. Its satellite office in Tamale serves the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions as well as the northern parts of the Volta and Brong Ahafo regions, with the aim of improving access of the fund to Business Associations and Farmer Based Groups (FBGs) in the operational area of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA). Mr. Puorideme urged PSOs in all MMDAs in the north to take advantage of the satellite office in Tamale to access the fund to do business advocacy, which will eliminate major constraints in their business operations and improve profitability. The BUSAC Fund Phase II is a direct follow-up to the BUSAC Fund Phase I which ended in February 2010. It is aimed at improving the business environment in Ghana to facilitate private-sector development and growth. The project seeks to build capacities of PSOs to identify, analyse and research into business environment challenges and constraints which hinder their development and growth, and to bring them up for redress by the appropriate agencies and institutions.
