DVLA Loses GH12,000 To Demonstration

THE Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Takoradi has disclosed that the organisation lost GH12,000 as revenue for not working on Tuesday because of the artisans demonstration in the industrial area of Kokompe, where the organisation is located. Mr Godson Wemegah, head of Western Regional DVLA, said the demonstration, which was spearheaded by mainly the youth, was rather poorly carried out and affected activities of the institutions dotted around the area. The massive demonstration forced the DVLA, the Ghana Water Company and other institutions including cluster of schools located in the vicinity to close abruptly. The DVLA boss, however, assured customers that the DVLA was capable of restoring their usual service. It would be recalled that on Tuesday a demonstration by artisans at Kokompe was met with the firing of tear gas by the police in an attempt to disperse the crowd that had mounted road blocks and burnt tyres to express their displeasure. It took many hours before the police could disperse the crowd. The demonstrators later issued an ultimatum to the authorities to construct the roads linking the industrial zone or risk witnessing another demonstration. Earlier in the day, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Captain Anthony Cudjoe, who had gone to the area to inspect things for himself, was allegedly heckled by the irate youth. He was hooted and apparently chased by the crowd and had to be whisked away by the police, according to eye witnesses. A grader that was assigned by the assembly to pave the way for construction work to start was prevented by the youth from operating.
