Ace waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has handed over a modern sanitary engineered landfill site to the government of Liberia through the Monrovia City Corporation as part of the... ...Emergency Monrovia Urban Sanitation (EMUS) project which seeks to provide support for primary and secondary waste collection activities as well as waste disposal services. The one million dollar project is part of a 24.9 million dollar support under the EMUS project jointly financed by the Liberia Reconstruction Trust Fund (LRTF) and the International Development Association (IDA) with the World Bank managing the project. The EMUS project include the construction of a Landfill cells at Whein Town, a suburb of Monrovia, two transfer stations, solid waste collection and three weigh bridges among others. Handing over the landfill at a ceremony at the City Hall in Monrovia last Tuesday, the Director of Administration of Zoomlion Ghana, Mr. Emmanuel Okomeng said the completed sanitary landfill cells have engineered features such as subsoil drains to trap, collect and divert subsurface water from entering the cells. �Clay layer as well as installed geomembrane liner prevents the seepage of leachate into ground water systems,� he said adding �perforated leachate collecting pipes connects the cells to the anaerobic ponds for treatment.� Mr. Okomeng paid glowing tribute to the President of Liberia, Her Excellency Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her warm reception to the Zoomlion team and her support for the work undertaken. He was also grateful to the World Bank, officials of the Monrovia City Corporation and key stakeholders for their support for the project, stressing that, �Zoomlion cherishes its relationship with Liberia and want to continue to support your development efforts.� Beside the landfill Zoomlion is currently sweeping parts of the street of Monrovia, manages a transfer station and have shipped a lot of the 240 litre bins to Liberia to help with environmental sanitation nationwide. The Acting Mayor of Monrovia, Madam Mary Broh, on her part said the construction work of the landfill was awarded to Zoomlon after going through a rigorous competitive bidding process. She said the landfill is the best designed in West Africa for which the World Bank is to replicate in countries such as Sierra Leone. She praised Zoomlion for the excellent work done and invited all well meaning Monrovians to visit the site to acquaint themselves with what has been done with the support of development partners.
