Woman Lace Drinks With Indian Hemp

Veronica Adodo, a trader, has been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly lacing drinks, which she sells to customers, with Indian hemp, popularly known as wee. The accused person was put before a court presided over by Francis Obiri and charged with possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority. She pleaded not guilty. She has been remanded on the orders of the trial judge while the case has been adjourned to July 24, 2012. Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecuting officer, DSP C.A. Morkeh, told the court the accused person was a trader and a bar operator while the complainants were police officers stationed at Odokor. He said on July 2, 2012, the Odokor Police Command had a tip-off that the trader had engaged in the sale of narcotic drugs at a spot at Mallam Bolla Road. He stated that based on the information, police officers at the Odokor Command proceeded to the said spot, where they met the accused person doing business as usual and arrested her. According to the police officer, the complainants searched the bar but did not find anything so they proceeded to search her room in her presence and discovered four parcels of compressed leaves believed to be Indian hemp. In addition, the prosecutor observed that the police also found a quantity of wrapping paper believed to be used in wrapping the wee, as well as alcoholic drinks believed to have been laced with the Indian hemp. DSP Morkeh noted that during interrogation, the trader admitted the offence and said she bought them from someone whose place of abode she could not identify. He stated that the trader was consequently arraigned while the exhibits had been sent to the Ghana Standards Board for analytical examination.
