Newmont Supports Underprivileged

Newmont Ghana has assisted United Way Ghana (UWG) to support the underprivileged in the country. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) received a vehicle and an amount of GH120,000 through the companys Workplace Giving Program. Newmonts Workplace Giving Program also known as Boa Me Na Me Mmoa Wo is an effective philanthropic initiative that offers opportunities for employees and Newmont to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged in society through simple but regular voluntary contributions. Speaking at a ceremony in Accra, Regional Vice President, Human Resources of Newmont, Dave Kern, said the donation was to help spur on UWG to achieve greater levels to impact the lives of the underprivileged. We are making a formal presentation of our 2011 Workplace Giving contributions of GH120,000, made up of our employees contribution of GH60,000 and our companys equal match-up of GH60,000 and a vehicle to help you undertake various projects in the charities our employees have chosen to support, Dave Kern said. The Vice President reiterated that through Newmonts partnership with UWG, which dates back to 2006 when the company started operations in Ghana, its employees touched a lot of lives through initiatives such as Day of Caring and Workplace Giving Programs. Newmonts three-year $150,000 start-up support to UWG has contributed significantly to the growth of the NGOs Day of Caring program. Through the Day of Caring and Workplace Giving programs, Newmont employees have contributed over GH230,000 and 3,000 man hours to support charities and undertake social responsibility activities in its communities. Newmont has supported charities such as the Akropong School for the Blind, Mums Love Orphanage in Sunyani, Help Age Ghana and the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and others. Newmont will continue to embark on these and other partnerships that would ensure sustainable development in our communities and the country as a whole. I commend all employees who participated in these worthwhile programs, he added. Receiving the donation, the Executive Director of United Way Ghana, Jonathan Akuamoah, thanked Newmont for their immeasurable support, adding, Newmont has been our backbone in this charity work and we are most grateful to them. Jonathan Akuamoah said this vehicle and cash donated to us will really make our programs more effective and also help us extend help to more needy persons. A Governing Council Member of UWG, Dr. Juliet Tuakli commended the management and employees of Newmont Ghana for supporting the NGO. She said her outfit will continue to engage Newmont through its effective partnership programs.
