Kumasi Holds Vigil...

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, (RCC) with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, last night held a vigil with bonfire at the Jubilee Park as part of the funeral activities for the late President John Evans Atta Mills. It attracted a huge gathering of mourners, including traditional rulers, the clergy, imams, politicians, civil servants and the members of the public. They were all dressed in red and black colours to signify that they were in a mood of mourning. Giant screens were erected from where video clips of the achievements of the late leader within the three years were played back. In addition, there was a play back of some of his speeches, which were mainly rallying the nation to uphold and protect the peace. Amidst traditional funeral performances such the Kete, Adowa and other cultural dances from the various ethnic groups in the metropolis, some mourners, the women, wept uncontrollably. Opanin Kwadwo Brobbey, a 59-year old farmer, said he was there to keep wake as his last respects to the late President. Alhaji Alhassan Ibrahim, Regional Secretary of the NDC Zongo Caucus, said the Zongo Community was deeply saddened by the demise of President Mills. They would use the Ramadan to pray for his soul, he said. Professor Mills, who became Ghanas third President of the Fourth Republic in January 2009, died at the 37th Military Hospital on Tuesday, July 24, two days after he turned 68.
