Give Mills Ex-gratia To His Wife & Son Egbert Faibille

The Editor of the Ghanaian Observer newspaper, Egbert Faibille, has proposed that the ex-gratia of late President John Evans Atta Mills should be given to his wife, Dr. Ernestina Naadu Mills and son, Sam Kofi Atta Mills. According to him, the two deserve the ex-gratia of the late president even though he did not complete his term of office. The late presidents family is likely to receive six cars with insurance, maintenance and fuel provided by the State. Instead of a fully furnished house in Accra, and another at a location in Ghana, they will be receiving rent allowance from the State, based on the reviewed recommendations. It is not clear if they will get to travel for up to 60 days per year paid for by the State and they could also get one million dollars seed money for the creation of a Presidential Institute or Foundation in his memory. A member of the NDC legal team, Abraham Amaliba explained to Citi News that the late President is entitled to his ex-gratia even though Article 68 of the Constitution does not mention when the President dies or where the President dies. He advised that section of the Constitution should be given a purposive approach to interpretation because why would we give a retiring President or a President who is removed from office such entitlement including ex-gratia, but deny a President who died while working. It doesnt make sense.
