Asamoah Gyan To Captain Black Stars In AFCON Qualifier

Al Ain striker Asamoah Gyan will captain the Black Stars in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi this Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium. The 26-year-old will be playing his first Black Stars game since taking a temporary break after missing a penalty at the 2012 Afcon in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in February. His first invitation after the self imposed exile was the friendly game against China last month, but he was an unused substitute. Earlier in the week, reports from the Black Stars indicated that either Gyan or Derek Boateng will lead the team. But the technical handlers have finally settled on the former Sunderland man. This was indirectly confirmed by the GFA spokesperson, Ibrahim Saani Daara, who invited the goal poacher as the captain of the team to thank the deputy sports minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, who paid the team a visit at their training grounds on Thursday morning. The substantive captain of the team, John Mensah, was left out of the squad while the first deputy, Micahel Essien, is yet to announce his return to the team. The next per the order is John Paintsil who was also ignored.
