Government has promised to give tax rebates to mobile telephone companies who extend mobile telephony and internet services to rural and remote parts of the country. Already the Ghana Investment Fund for Communication or GIFEC has installed a new mobile telephony system in 10 sites across the country thus providing mobile phone and internet services to about 20,000 rural dwellers. The new technology makes it easier for rural telephony systems to be operated. Communication Minister Haruna Iddrisu inaugurated the system at Botoku in the Volta region recently. He said mobile operators willing to partner the government in extending rural mobile telephony will benefit from some policy interventions. Haruna Iddrisu also promised that government will extend the system to several other rural and remote communities in the country before the year ends.
