DWENEWOHO IS a farming community in the Nkoranza North District of the Brong Ahafo region. The only school in the community is the D/A Primary School with a population of about 120 pupils.
Unlike other schools in the district where furniture is provided by the District Assembly, pupils at Dwenewoho D/A primary school sit on the bare floor to study and write their exams. When DAILY GUIDE visited the school, only a few of the teachers were on duty. A teacher who spoke on the basis of anonymity said a greater number of the teachers lived outside the village because of lack of accommodation.
It was exams time and when this reporter entered one of the classrooms around 10:00am, very few children were sitting on chairs while the rest were kneeling on the bare floor to write the test which was written on the blackboard.
The irony of it all is that even the teacher who is supposed to sit at his table had no table. He told this reporter that several appeals made to the District Director of Education and the District Chief Executive for help had fallen on deaf ears. Several calls made on the cell phone of the District Director of Education to get his side of the story went unanswered.
These are the children who will eventually write the BECE with their counterparts in schools like Morning Star, Martyrs of Uganda, John Teye and other high profile schools across the country.
