MELCOM DISASTER: BNI Hunts For Owner Of Building

Nana Kwesi Boadu, owner of the collapsed six-storey building that housed the Melcom shopping centre, is now the subject of a massive manhunt. He is wanted by the Bureau of National Investigations and city authorities. The Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) has mounted a search for the owner of the collapsed Melcom building at Achimota and the contractors who constructed the building. Earlier on Thursday, the Co-Managing Director of Melcom, Ramesh Sadhwani and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's (AMA) Director of Works, Victor Mensah were invited for questioning by the BNI. They were to assist in investigations following a directive by President John Mahama. The Chief Executive of the AMA, Alfred Vanderpuiye had earlier issued a public notice to the owner of the building to turn himself in. But as at 6pm on Thursday, Mr Boadu, owner of the building, had still not reported. A Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who spoke to CitiNews, on the issue, said the arrest of the owner was critical to the ongoing investigations. It is important to note that Melcom were tenants in the building and the main owner who constructed the building and indeed the contractors he used are still being sought after by the BNI. The BNI is confident they will get the owner of the building and they are still pursuing him and as and when the BNI lay hands on him, we will let the good people of Ghana know, he added.
