Dont Vote-EC Warns Minors

The Electoral Commission (EC) has appealed to parents of minors whose names are captured in the voters register to dissuade those underage persons from voting in the December elections. The Chairman of the EC, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, cautioned that minors who would take part in the voting risked prosecution and imprisonment, even when they were found out after the polls. During a dialogue with members of the Editors Forum Ghana (EFG) in Accra yesterday, the EC expressed concern over the large number of minors on the voters register, saying, This is a real problem; this is a potential source of conflict. Although Dr. Afari-Gyan could not provide specific figures in respect of suspected minors in the 14.07 million voters register, he produced printed samples of data on the minors to journalists to buttress his deep worry over their numbers and spread across the country. He said having completed the process of compiling the register, the only means that could be used to remove the names of minors from it now was a court order. He said the EC would begin interactions with the presidential candidates today to seek consensus on how best they (candidates) could use their campaign platforms to dissuade minors from voting.
