23 Year Old Remanded For Possession Of Narcotic

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a-twenty-three-year-old man into custody for allegedly possessing dried leaves, suspected to be cannabis sativa, a narcotic drug. The accused person, Kamara Dini Haruna, was allegedly arrested by the police patrol team on the Accra-Ho highway upon a tip-off. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority, contrary to section 2 (1) of PNDC Law 236/90, when he appeared before the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri. He is expected to make his next appearance before the court on December 4, 2012. The facts are that on October 2012, at about 4:15pm, personnel of the National Highway Patrol Unit on duty on the Accra-Ho motorway intercepted a Toyota mini-bus with registration number GT 3719-09. The Prosecutor, ASP C.K Abadamlora told the court that a search was conducted on the passengers and in their luggages, and in the course 46 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis concealed in two traveling bags belonging to the accused person were found. He said the accused person was arrested together with the exhibit and handed over to the narcotic unit for investigation. According to the prosecutor, in the accused person's cautioned statement, he denied ownership of the exhibit, adding that the said dried leaves had been forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for examination and report.
