Ghana's Mohammed Abu Rules Himself Out of Playing At AFCON

Ghana midfielder Mohammed Abu has given up on playing at the 2013 Nations Cup finals after a loan move to Spain slowed his development. The 20-year-old talented midfielder has joined Spanish La Liga side Rayo Vallecano on a season's-long loan deal. But the Manchester City loanee is yet to make his debut for the club. Abu has conceded that his inactivity this season will deny him a place in Kwesi Appiah's squad for the 19 January to 10 February tournament. "I got the chance to play at the Nations Cup for the first time at Gabon and Equatorial Guinea," he said. "I was hoping I will play in the next one in South Africa as part of my progression but it appears I might not make it. "I have not played many games this season and this is the reason." Abu made only one appearance for Ghana at 2012 finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea where the Black Stars finished fourth.
