Prof. Kofi Agyekum, the Head of Linguistics Department, University of Ghana, Legon, has said girls in recent times have taken over the mantle of academic work from their male counterparts and have excelled in many disciplines in the school curriculum. Prof. Kofi Agyekum said this in his closing remarks as Chairman of the 25th anniversary celebration of Hannah School Complex, Madina, which was held at the Institute of Local Government School at Madina, in Accra over the weekend. Prof. Kofi Agyekum, a popular panelist on Peace FM�s Kokrokoo morning show, and popularly referred to as Opanyin Agyekum, noted that at nearly every awards ceremony organized in schools, more than 80% of the winners were females and this was a signal that their male counterparts were not performing as expected. Opanyin Agyekum attributed the poor performance of the boys to practices such as �guyism and �Ottofistasm� and always walking around with earpieces in their ears.� Prof. Agyekum urged the youth to build their lives on being the embodiment of truth and adhere strictly to the prescription of religion to live uprightly. The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adenta, Kwadwo Adu-Asare, who spoke to Daily Guide, said society expected more from the boy-child; therefore this was a challenge every male must know and appreciate. The MP continued that boys were held in high esteem in every family and so they should study hard, and if they cannot over-take the female counterparts, at least create a balance in their levels of academic achievements to avoid being pushed to the background. He also appealed to the youth to use the internet wisely for purposes that would enhance their academic build-up.
