Dr. Ibrahim was speaking to the press after a two-day conference on the role of civil society in ensuring peace and stability in West Africa. The conference was organized by WACSOF. Dr. Ibrahim urged civil societies to ensure that the rules and procedures spelt out in the elections were followed totally. He said Ghana remained an example not only for Africa but the whole world on how to conduct credible elections and hoped the country would not disappoint the world this year. Dr. Ibrahim said ECOWAS had put in place a 250 election observation mission to watch the December polls. The team had the task of monitoring the December elections with the goal of ascertaining the level of credibility and peacefulness of the elections process, he said Dr. Ibrahim said ECOWAS is determined to give an observer report that is accurate. There will not be any cover up by ECOWAS and we as members of the observation mission team will work to ensure accuracy in their report. The objective of the two-day conference was to ascertain specific opportunities which ECOWAS Vision 2020 offered for civil society to intervene to bring about peace, stability and good governance in West Africa. Other objectives are to review the models of engagement of civil society globally in addressing democratic peace and security challenges, and adjust the framework to suit the West African region.
