Police Dismiss Attack On Ayariga�s Convoy

The Western Regional Police Commander has denied claims by Hassan Ayariga, presidential candidate of the People�s National Convention (PNC) that he was attacked by armed robbers while touring the northern part of Western region. Media reports suggested that the PNC flagbearer was attacked by some persons suspected to be armed robbers in the Western region. The reports indicated that a member of Yariga�s campaign team was shot in the arm and rushed to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi for treatment. Security operatives, who accompanied Mr. Ayariga, were reported to have exchanged fire with the armed robbers who attacked the PNC flagbearer. However, speaking to DAILY GUIDE in an interview, ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, the Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional Police Command, disclosed the PNC flagbearer and his members were not attacked. According to the Regional Police PRO, upon hearing the alleged incident, the Police Command in the western region quickly commenced investigations. She explained at about 9:00 pm last Friday, the vehicle of one Eric Offei believed to be a businessman was attacked and he was shot by armed robbers at Kwesi Adaekrom, a farming community in the Sefwi Juaboso area in the region. �Nothing happened to the PNC presidential convoy. They happened to be there at that at the time of the incident, she indicated. ASP Adikku mentioned that when the police in Juaboso also heard about the incident they rushed to the scene, stressing that the police met Ayariga�s convoy at the scene. I learnt that before the police got to the scene the robbers bolted away,� she added. ASP Olivia Adiku said the victim, Eric Offei was said to have sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. She indicated that the police were investigating the matter. This is the second time that the PNC flagbearer has reported an armed attack.
