A YOUNG man suspected to be grave-digger has been arrested by police at Konongo in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti Region for attempting to exhume the body of the late Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, former Finance and Economic Planning Minister in the Kufuor administration.
A niece of the late minister, Yaa Adoma, said when the news spread, hundreds of Asante-Akim Agogo community members, mostly the youth, gathered at the graveyard and expressed their anger.
According to her, police officers rushed to the scene and took the suspect, Sylvester Feli, into custody after spotting a dent on the tombstone made with tiles.
She told Daily Guide that the young man had forced open the padlocks to the gate and entered the house protecting the tomb when his action was discovered by some residents.
The suspect�s intent has not yet been established, though residents suspected that he was a grave looter.
Baah-Wiredu died in a South African hospital where he had gone to seek medical attention in 2008. Baah-Wiredu�s mortal remains were interred on a piece of land he bought at Russia, a suburb of Agogo, where he intended building a modern community library for the people of the area.
The family decided to bury him on the land because some individuals had pledged to build the library complex and name it after the man who undoubtedly paid his dues not only to his party, the New Patriotic Party but the nation as a whole.
He was survived by his mother, wife Margaret and 12 children.
