UPDATED: Regional Minister Survives Shoot-out

The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, on Friday morning, escaped death when he was shot in his vehicle through the rear in an armed robbery attack on the Gwollu-Wa road. According to security sources, Alhaji Sulemana who was on his way to Wa from Gwollu, upon reaching a spot between Kwala and Gbal all in the Sissala West district, bumped into a robbery attack at about 8:45am. The robbers, believed to be about eight in number had earlier ordered occupants of other vehicles to lie on the floor while they robbed them. When the Regional Minister's vehicle arrived at the scene, the robbers moved towards it and noticed the presence of a policeman in the vehicle. The source said the policeman quickly opened fire on the robbers who also returned fire and in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, some of the robbers who unknown to the policeman were hiding in the bush behind the regional ministers vehicle shot him from behind. It said the policeman was able to overcome the robbers who fled into the bush after which Alhaji Sulemana was rushed to the Gwollu hospital where he was given first aid. The driver of the minister and the bodyguard escaped unhurt while the condition of the regional minister is stable. The regional minister has since been transferred to the Wa regional hospital for further treatment.
