MELCOM Agona Swedru Branch Had A Valid Fire Certificate

Reports that Agona Swedru branch of Melcom Shopping Mall, which was razed by fire Saturday night, had an invalid or expired fire certificate, have turned out to be false. At about 21:00 hours GMT on Saturday, after workers of that branch had closed and locked the Shopping Mall up for the day, fire swept through the furniture section of the shop, leaving devastation in its wake. Though there was no casualty, two warehouses close to the Melcom building, which were said to have been heavily stocked with goods on Saturday for Christmas sales, were also burnt. It took a team of firemen from Apam, Breman Asikuma, Budumburam and Kasoa divisions of the Ghana Fire Service over eight hours, to bring the fire under control. Having put out the fire, Ebenezer Mensah, the Agona West Municipal Fire Commander reportedly told the media his outfits preliminary findings indicate that Melcoms fire certificate could have expired as at the time of the incident. But contrary to his assertions, Peacefmonline.com can confirm that, the countrys largest retail shop had a valid fire certificate. Painstaking investigations and checks at the Central Regional Fire Service office reveal that the MELCOM branch at Agona Swedru has a valid fire certificate dated 7th June, 2012, which is valid for the next twelve months. The valid fire certificate was issued and signed on behalf of the Chief Fire Officer by one, Ebenezer Simpson (ACFO), Acting Director of Fire Safety. Attached is a copy of the fire certificate.
