FORMER PRESIDENT John Agyekum Kufuor has debunked speculations that he is pressurizing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the NPP flagbearer, to concede defeat in the presidential polls and not proceed to court for the sake of peace.
Urging Ghanaians, notably NPP faithful, to treat the wild rumour with the contempt that it deserved, the former president, who ruled the country for eight years, stated that he was in total support of the NPP�s decision to go to court to contest the results of the polls.
Wild speculations making the rounds in the country suggested that former President Kufuor, who campaigned actively for the NPP in the lead up to the 2012 polls, did not believe it was prudent for the party to go to court and challenge the election results, tasking Nana Akufo Addo to avoid going to court.
Reacting to the issue, Frank Agyekum, spokesperson of ex-President Kufuor disclosed that Mr. Kufuor was the first NPP member that suggested that the party should proceed to court to contest the results of the polls as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to him, ex-President Kufuor reached that decision after he and other party bigwigs became convinced that there were widespread irregularities in the polls across the country- a development which went a long way to help the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be adjudged winners in the elections.
He recounted how former President Kufuor emphatically stated before the AU president and ECOWAS team that monitored the polls that the NPP would not accept the verdict of the EC and would therefore proceed to court to state their case for the law to take its course when they paid a courtesy call on him.
Speaking on radio after the NPP had filed a petition at the Supreme Court to contest the results of the 2012 presidential elections on Friday, Mr. Kufuor�s spokesperson said his boss was extremely delighted that finally the party had done his heart�s desire by proceeding to court.
Mr. Agyekum therefore reiterated his earlier call on NPP members across the country to ignore rumours that Mr. Kufuor did not like the decision of the party to go to court, suspecting that those peddling that wild rumours were doing so just to create confusion in the NPP, �but it will not work.�
The evidence gathered so far by the NPP after weeks of hard work, he stated, was gargantuan enough to help the NPP to win the case at the Supreme Court, urging the teeming fans of the largest opposition political party to have faith in the party�s leadership.
