Noise Pollution Lands Man In Jail

What began as a harmless request for a mechanic to reduce the volume of his television set has resulted in his incarceration. This was after Abdul the mechanic, Fatau Karim grabbed a stick; hit the right arm of Edith Djogbefia, a seamstress resulting in a broken arm. The incident happened when Karim visited his girlfriend, Comfort Mensah at Nungua Zongo, whilst watching television at Comfort�s provision sales point which is close to Edith�s House. Edith approached Fatau and pleaded with him to reduce the volume of the TV set because of excessive noise; but Karim took offence and shouted: �Go and stay in a residential area or stay in the estates�. The prosecutor said a misunderstanding ensued between the two and in the process; Karim grabbed a stick and hit the right hand of Djogbefia, resulting in a fracture. A report was made to the police on November 6, last year and Karim was arrested and granted bal; but he failed to report at the police station. On January 1, this year, a forfeiture of recognizance was served on the surety to produce Karim before court on February 15, this year. On February 3, this year, with the help of others, the surety arrested Fatau and detained him at the Greda Estates Police Station. When Karim appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Patience Mills Tetteh on Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to the charge of assault. Fatau could not pay the fine of GH�7,200 imposed on him by the court, so he is currently serving two �years imprisonment.
