Man Surrenders Weapon To Police

The institution of an award scheme to retrieve weapons in the Bawku Municipality yielded dividends when on Monday a young man willingly gave up an M16 assault rifle to the police to foster peace. The young man, whose name was withheld for security reasons, handed over the rifle to the police saying it was part of his contribution in ensuring that peace prevailed in the area. Mr Abdulai Musah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku in an interview with Ghana News Agency on Monday, expressed joy at the cooperation the general public lent to the Municipal Security Committee towards the attainment of peace in the area. He indicated that even if it meant spending all the Assemblys Common Fund allocation to ensure a retrieval of all the weapons, his outfit was prepared to do so. Assistant Commissioner of Police Buadu Kweku Peprah, Bawku Divisional Police Commander disclosed that the latest surrender came to two, the number of weapons retrieved since the scheme was instituted. He said the police and the general security apparatus operating in the area would continue to cooperate with the general public to retrieve all weapons so as to create the desired environment for the development in the area. ACP Peprah gave the assurance that the police would protect the identities of any persons who would volunteer to hand over their weapons, or who would give information leading to the retrieval of weapons that were used to fuel conflict in the area.
