The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that it has awarded Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) licences in the 2500 � 2690 MHz band to Surfline Limited and GoldKey Properties Limited. An NCA document obtained by the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday indicated that the companies won a licence each for paired frequency configuration, and G-Kwiknet Limited won a licence for unpaired configuration. According to NCA each licence cost $6,000,000.00 (Six MillionUnited States Dollars) and shall be valid for a period of 10 years.


 
 �BWA licences are intended to provide wireless broadband connectivity to subscribers and licensees are authorized to develop and operate broadband networks to provide nationwide BWA services,� NCA stated in a document.

 According to the NCA the Licensee(s) and end-users shall be allowed to employ any suitable technology of their choice to provide fixed, nomadic or mobile broadband services throughout Ghana. The NCA said nine (9) applications went through the process: five (5) applications for paired frequency configuration of 2 x 15MHz, and four (4) applications for unpaired frequency configuration of 1 x 30MHz. The NCA said it was committed to employing appropriate regulatory mechanisms to achieve Government�s Policy objective of "giving every citizen and resident access to high quality and affordable Broadband services, to facilitate the accelerated transformation of Ghana into a knowledge-based society and technology-driven economy.�
