Confirmed: Minority Boycotts State of The Nation Address

Peacefmonline.com can confirm that the minority members of parliament have boycotted President John Dramani Mahama's State of the Nation Address in Parliament. An interview with the minority leader in parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu indicated that they would be present today to go on with their normal duties in parliament. However, Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea told Citi News that the Minority Members of Parliament will not be part of the State of the Nation Address to be delivered by the President on Thursday. According to Mr. Akomea the party and its parliamentarians will make political choices as to the event to take part in or otherwise. He said their [NPP] supporters are very happy with the decision of the party. Mr. Akomea said the party will continue to opt out of some state functions until the court decides the final outcome of its election 2012 petition. The judgment of the Supreme Court will bring closure and finality to the matter; what the court will decide becomes the national interest. The Party leadership directed the Minority caucus to boycott the address in protest of the conduct and outcome of the 2012 elections. The party is contesting at the Supreme Court the results of the 2012 presidential election, which it claims was fraught with irregularities. However, the minority members are absent from the house as the President delivers his address.
