Government Urged To Strengthen NLC, Others To Exercise Mandate

Government has been asked to strengthen and resource the National Labour Commission (NLC), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Labour Department to be able to exercise their mandates in the common interest of the employer and the employee. This was contained in a communiqus issued jointly by NLC, FWSC, Ghana Employers Association (GEA) and organised labour after a two-day workshop to deliberate on good working negotiations for workers, on Tuesday at Ho, in the Volta Region. The communiqu urged parties in negotiations to not to use the media to settle their difference when they encounter difficulties, and appealed to government to empower the Public Services Commission (PSC) to carry out its role and educate public service workers on its duties. The statement also urged the NLC to step up education and sensitisation of the public on the Labour Act and legislative instruments, adding that employers and government must see unions as special partners, and have regular interactions with each other outside crisis period. It called on unions to delegate members who have sufficient mandate to negotiate and sign agreements on their behalf so that all parties would recognize such discussions.
