Police Confirms: NPP Did Report Bawumias Accident

The Northern Regional Police Command has confirmed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did file an official report of the accident involving Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the partys vice-presidential candidate in the 2012 election last Sunday. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, DCOP George Tuffour stated that the NPP reported the incident at the Bamboi police station in the Northern Region. This is however, contrary to earlier report that the party did not report the issue and that they were unwilling to co-operate with the Police Service. A statement issued from the Office of Dr Bawumia on Friday and signed by the Press Aide, Kwabena Boadu, stressed that within an hour of the accident, the Vice-Chairman of the NPP in the Bole Bamboi constituency, Zakaria Suleiman officially reported the accident to the Bole police. It would be recalled that days after the accident, the police disclosed that the NPP towed the vehicle from the accident scene without their permission. Consequently, the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police service on Thursday wrote to the opposition party directing that the vehicle in which Dr Bawumia was travelling in when the accident occurred, be produced. According to the police investigators, they are reliably informed that some leaders of the NPP caused the accident vehicle to be towed to an unknown location, warning that failure to hand over the car within 24 hours could result in a drastic action. "Your failure to cooperate with us in this investigation will compel us to seek assistance of the law court for further action, portions of the order letter from the police read. But speaking on the issue for the first time via a press statement, Dr Bawumia stated that the police in Bole were notified of the decision to tow the vehicle to Accra after the accident scene was inspected. The Tamale Regional Police Commander revealed that reports he received on the day of the accident indicate that the police arrived at the scene as the car was being towed away. He, however, could not confirm whether permission had been sought or not from the Bole Police Commander before the act of towing was enforced.
