Strike By Teachers To End Monday?

The nationwide strike by teachers across the country may soon be called off as the Ministry of Education gears up to meet the various stakeholders in the education sector after thorough deliberations. The teacher unions will hold series of meetings on Monday, March 25, 2013 to decide on their next line of action. This was disclosed by the Public Relations Director of Education Ministry, Paul Krampah, in an interview with Joy FM. The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) declared a nationwide strike on Friday, March 15, 2013. The teachers called on government and the Fair Wages and Salary Commission to address their concerns regarding the Single Spine Salary Scheme. They outlined four major problems associated with their salary scheme and so, embarked on a strike action until their grievances are resolved. They complained of inconsistencies in the payment of their car maintenance, payment of yearly incremental credit, promotion of teachers, retention premium and WAEC invigilation allowances. However, Mr. Krampah has indicated that the major issues raised by the teachers have been sorted out with exception of their retention premium, which he assured will also be dealt with on Monday during the teachers meeting. He was hopeful the teachers will rescind their strike action and resume attending classes.
