Asamoah Gyan: I Allowed Muntari Captain Ghana As a 'Sign of Respect'

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says he allowed Sulley Muntari to captain the Black Stars in Sundays 4-0 win over Sudan as a sign of respect. The UAE-based striker, who is the permanent captain of the team, hinted that he could allow other senior players in the team to captain the side in future. Gyan gave the chance to the AC Milan star to lead the team in Kumasis emphatic 2014 World Cup qualifying victory. Explaining the decision to offer Muntari the armband, Gyan revealed that his respect for the AC Milan player was behind his reason of giving him the armband. Asamoah Gyan who captained Ghana in the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but exhibited meager leadership says the AC Milan midfielder was not present when Coach Kwesi Appiah nominated him for the captainship so he must show respect to Muntari in his return to the team. Sulley Muntari is one of the old players in the team and I have to show him respect. Since I was appointed the captain, he (Muntari) wasnt around so I have to show him that respect to wear the armband, he said. He further added; I was a bit superstitious to give him (Muntari) the band to lead the team Ghana closed the gap at the top in Group D with an efficient 4-0 win over Sudan on Sunday in Kumasi. Abdul Majeed Waris scored his first competitive goal for the Black Stars in the second half before substitute Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu also tapped in from his lay off after first half goals from Asamoah Gyan and Mubarak Wakaso. Asamoah Gyan is very optimistic Ghanas World Cup dream is on course after trashing Sudan. The team (Black Stars) played very well and we kept our composure. The Sudanese were very tactical and played with a defensive mind but we were also strong and at the end of the day we scored four goals, its really important for the team. Zambia who are leading the group drew so the four nil win have boosted our confidence. We are hoping to win all our matches and we will be in Brazil for the World Cup, he concluded.
