YARA Ghana has partnered the COCOBOD and the Crop Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) to continue its annual farmer education and training programmes for cocoa farmers this April. In all about 2,400 farmers in 16 cocoa growing districts are expected to be educated on proper application of the Nitrabor and Asaasewura fertilizers for improved cocoa yield in the country. The objectives of the two-week training programme include promoting efficient and economically sustainable supply of fertilizer to cocoa farmers as well as creating an enabling environment for farmers to grow. Managing Director of YARA Ghana Mr. Mehdi Saint Andre said good agricultural practices as well as linking farmers to markets and inputs are some of the training that will be given to the farmers. He said YARA Ghana sees the training programme as a Corporate Social Responsible initiative geared towards increasing the production of cocoa in the country. �Increasing cocoa production depends on the significant change in the fertilizer application equation.� �The use of Nitrabor and Asaasewura fertilizers would help to produce more and quality cocoa beans to help sustain the country�s position at the world market,� he added. For his part, Mr. Alex Afrifa, Head of Agronomy Department at CRIG said for the past years, YARA Ghana has been bolstering the fertilizer marketplace in Ghana and encouraging consistent and responsible fertilizer use so smallholder farmers can grow food and profits. He commended YARA for taking the bold initiative to provide training to the farmers to improve cocoa production in the country.
