AFAG Rubbishes Police Threat; We Will Still Demonstrate

Chairman of the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), Dr. Ayew Afriyie has rubbished the Greater Accra Regional Police Command�s threat to seek court injunction on their demonstration, saying that AFAG will embark on their demonstration as schedule. �As far as I know and AFAG men know, 18th is the day we are going ahead with the demonstration. "So like the police said, we (AFAG) had an extensive meeting with them but did not come to an amicable conclusion. They (Police) made it clear they would stop us through legal means by going to the court, but for us what we want to tell them (the police) is that, as far as we know we are going...I would want to sound it clear to all our members that we are going on our demonstration on the 18th,� he said. The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has threatened to head to court to seek an injunction to prevent pressure Group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) from going ahead with their intended demonstration. According to the Police, AFAG has so far not agreed to put on hold their planned demonstration until the Supreme Court is done hearing the election petition. The Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey told Peace FMs Midday News bulletin on Wednesday that, the service will be committing many of its personnel to the court proceedings making it impossible for it to provide security for the thousands of people who may take part of the demonstration. Speaking on Asempa FM, Dr. Ayew Afriyie Chairman of the group stated categorically that, it members will adhere to any statement and rules from the police service and will not battle them in court as speculated. �We will never counter the police in court. It�s not necessary to us...I say and maintain that AFAG is going on a demonstration on the 18th of April,� he assured. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey has told Asempa FM that �We (the Police) will use every legitimate means to stop the demonstration and the public order act had directed us on what to do which is going to court� We on our own cannot stop AFAG. And we are happy that when we use the legitimate means, they (AFAG) will respect the opposition of the court�.
