Expect More Rains - Senior Meteorologist Cautions

Senior Meteorologist at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Joe Tetteh Portophy has warned Ghanaians to expect more rains this year, with figures expected to be above the historical average. According to our modules, the Northern Belt and the Eastern Coastal belt will have above normal rainfall and the transitional belt and the forest belt will have normal rain, he stated. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Portophy described the expected rains as one that will come with "very strong and gusty winds." He thus called on Ghanaians to take precautionary measures in order to limit the effects of the rains. With the kind of atmospheric temperature we are experiencing, most of the torrential rain that might be coming will come with a strong and gusty wind. This is caused by the intense and prolonged rainfall that will happen so that when the intensity or duration is very high, then we are to expect a flash flood." Mr. Portuphe concluded: We need to be alert and prepared because we are trying to give weather advise and put our early warning in place but other partners like NADMO, Fire Service and the Military are not properly resourced to be able to go to the field because we dont have the men to go to the field and tell people to move to highlands.
