3 Suspects Break Jail

Three suspected criminals allegedly broke jail at the Manso Nkwanta Police Station in the Ashanti Region in the early hours of Saturday. One of the escapees was, however, re-arrested at Suntreso, a village in the Amansie West District. The incident had plunged the police into a state of confusion as it was alleged there was no police officer at the station at the time of the escape. According to sources, the suspects, who were being held over various offences, allegedly broke the padlock of the cell before they escaped. It could not be immediately confirmed how many police officers were officially detailed for night duty at the sentry. At the time of filing this report, the identities of the fugitives had not been made known by the police. The Amansie West District Police Commander, Superintendent Mr Stephen Kwakye, confirmed the incident to the Graphic Online but would not give details. He, however, stated a manhunt launched by the police resulted in the re-arrest of one of the suspects at Suntreso, a village in the district. The police are still search for two other fugitives. It was not known whether the police officers who were supposed to be on duty would face any sanctions from the Ghana Police Service. Under police regulations, officers found culpable of negligence on duty could face punitive sanctions including dismissal.
