Mechanic Remanded For Digging Gold Illegally

An 18-year old mechanic caught digging for gold right inside the concession of the Owere Mines, a mining company, has appeared before a Jauso Circuit Court presided over by Justice Alex Obeng Asante. Francis Kwofie is facing charges of trespassing and illegal mining and he pleaded not guilty. He would re-appear on Friday, April 26. Police Chief Inspector Joseph Obeng told the court that the complainant is a security officer of the Mining Company while the accused is a mechanic at Odumase. On March 21, at about 1030 hours, he was on security patrol with his colleagues when the accused and an accomplice, now on the run, were spotted. The prosecution said upon seeing the security men, Kwofie and his accomplice took to their heels but they managed to apprehend him as the other person slipped through. Together with his digging tools chisels and hammer, and some stones dug out, he was handed over to the Police.
