Nigerian National Jailed For Illegal Possession Of Firearm

A Nigerian, Abubakar Zibo, who was caught carrying a locally made pistol, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour by a Kumasi circuit court. He pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing firearm and ammunition without lawful authority. Police Inspector Kwabena Oduro Boateng told the court presided over by Justice William Boampong that the complainant, Illiasu Adokor, and the convict are both traders at Mbrom, Kumasi. On January 30, at about 0830 hours, Adokor had his cash of GH360.00 stolen and suspecting the convict of the crime and decided to conduct a body search on him in the presence of a witness in the case. The prosecution said it was in the course of the search that the weapon and seven cartridges were found hidden in a small body-bag he was carrying. He was arrested and sent to the Suame Police Station together with the firearm and ammunition. Zibo in his caution statement denied the theft, but confessed to owning the weapon and cartridges.
